Thank you, in advance for your compassion and generosity.

2. Catholic Campaign for Human Development Annual Collection~~ November 22-23

******************************

For 37 million Americans, there is a thin line: between eviction and home, between hunger and health, between unemployment and work, between anxiety and stability. This line is the poverty line, and it is set at an annual income of $20,444 for a family of four.  But one by one, working together, we can reverse the trend. By joining with those in need, we can change the picture of poverty to one of hope.

The CCHD collection will be held the weekend of November 22-23, 2008.  Since 1970, CCHD has worked in our name to help people break the cycle of poverty, not for just a day, but for a lifetime through projects that support low-income people as they work together to solve community problems, increase educational opportunities, and create jobs.

Because of your generosity, last year alone nearly $400,000 was awarded to 23 organizations in the Archdiocese.  This funding has helped restore human dignity when it has been compromised or damaged by the “hellish cycle of poverty,” as described by Pope Paul VI.   Please donate prayerfully and generously next weekend.  Envelopes are in the pews and a flyer is included in the bulletin.

************************************************************

3. National Network to End Violence Against Immigrant Women

*************************************************************

Action requested by the National Network to End Violence Against Immigrant Women: Persons who are not citizens, and have been victims of crime (including trafficked victims), must pay high fees in order to overcome the problem of lacking a passport. This makes getting a U or T-visa difficult and hence lessens the possibility that these persons will testify in court, even though law enforcement has certified that they are helpful in the investigation or prosecution.
Please contact your legislators and have them call Homeland Security Chief, Secretary Chertoff, to ask that he "issue a

U- and T-visa fee waiver guidance" which will allow these persons to explain why they deserve a waiver and Immigration complete their applications for status. Chertoff's number is: 202-282-8495.

1. Fair Trade Sports Holiday Shopping

**************************************

Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks, not shop...but if you do find yourself caught up in the season's shopping frenzy, consider purchasing a gently used item, rather then something brand new. For instance, if you are in need of a new soccer ball for your family, look at your local thrift shop, consignment store, or "Play It Again" retail store. If you still cannot find the sports ball you seek, you could visit our friends at www.fairtradesports.com, who have the world's first line of eco-certified Fair Trade sports balls for soccer, football, and basketball.
