Religion
During the second trimester, the second grade will continue to prepare
for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion. Parents are
encouraged to attend all meetings and Experience Days to fully
participate in their children’s preparation as well as to regularly
attend Mass on Sundays so that students become accustomed to
practicing their faith in the Church community.
Language Arts
The second grade will complete their first reader, Garden Gates,
as well as their Phonics book, in the second trimester. They will
start their second reader, Going Places, later in the
trimester, and concentrate on the areas of making predictions,
following directions, and classification, as well as continuing the
study of vowel digraphs, consonant clusters, word referents, and
alphabetical order. Creative writing will continue to be explored as
well as the practice of writing the answers to questions in complete
and thoughtful sentences. Students will also apply sentence structure
rules and discover the parts of speech.
Math
Counting money and telling time will be the spotlights of the
second trimester in Math. Students will also regularly practice their
addition and subtraction facts to hone these skills as they get ready
for two-digit addition. Problem-solving will still be addressed.
Social Studies
The second trimester units in Social Studies will continue with
knowing about one’s family and cover the areas of ancestors,
immigration, and family traditions.
Science
Our second graders have just finished studying about the earth’s
natural resources and how they are used. They will continue with the
examination of the earth long ago, including the topics of fossils and
dinosaurs.
