Our second trimester runs from
December 4 – March 16. Here are some topics and activities that are
related to each subject.
Religion
Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist and an in-depth study of the
Mass; the life of St. Augustine and St. Patrick plus some outstanding
Catholics of our age such as Charles de Foucauld and Edel Quinn; how
to say the Stations of the Cross; the religious celebrations of
Advent, Christmas, and Lent: Family Life topics.
Math
Distributive property in multiplication; division by one and
two digit divisors; median and mode of a set of numbers; prime and
composite numbers; decimal patterns in division; geometry: rays,
angles and lines plus how to measure them; congruent figures.
Reading
Unit II - read stories related to the theme, "The Land
of the Free"; as a class read the book, A Bridge to Terabithia;
read 125 pages/month in January, February, and March for Book-it;
practice skills related to multiple meanings, summarizing,
encyclopedia use, main ideas/details, fact/opinion, roots,
skimming/scanning, tall tales, synonyms/antonyms, prefixes such as co-
and in-.
English
Irregular and troublesome verbs; sentences: kinds plus
subjects and predicates; how to write a fictional story; adjectives;
how to write poetry: couplets, quatrains, and acrostics.
Spelling
Words with final –er sound; final –el and –al sounds;
unstressed syllables; words with –ed or –ing; suffixes; unstressed
endings.
Handwriting
Weekly practice with Spelling words written on two sheets
with control lines; practice with capital letters.
Science
Earth’s atmosphere; measuring atmospheric conditions;
oceans and the water cycle; weather; causes of the wind; air masses;
severe storms; weather prediction and climate; features of the sun and
planets.
