Required Summer Reading

Eighth graders are required to read two works of literature that will complement our study of history for the coming school year. The novel selection is your choice and, of course, you may read more than the required two novels. The follow-up is explained below.

Keep all of your summer reading work in a folder or spiral.

While and After You Read

  1. Keep a journal of all (at least 15) words with which you are unfamiliar and the definitions of these words. Record the sentence in which the word was used and the page # on which the word and sentence may be found.
  2. Write a summary of each (or every other chapter you read). This brief summary is not to exceed two sentences and must describe some action, journey, or character development in the story.
  3. For each novel, choose two characters in the story to write a 1-3 paragraph description of how they interacted, were related, or resolved a conflict/challenge in the novel.
