Early Fives Coursework
Taught by Mrs. Mary Ann Irvine

Religion
Religion class will develop and reinforce basic Christian beliefs and attitudes. (God loves us all; everyone is special in their own way; be thankful for all God’s gifts; etc.)

We will read and discuss the weekly Sunday gospels using Promise magazine.

Several Saints will be introduced throughout the year (St. Francis, St. Therese, St. Nicholas, St. Patrick).

Text used: Christ Jesus, The Way

Early Fives class will attend weekly Wednesday Masses starting in January.

Language Arts
The purpose of Language Arts is:

  • To promote the development of communication skills
  • To increase the child’s vocabulary
  • To introduce a variety of literary experiences
    • Listening to stories
    • Listening to poetry
    • Looking at books
    • Singing songs

Alphabet Recognition and printing skills will be stressed the first semester along with Phonics skills reinforced through the WTR Lab (Writing-To-Read Lab) daily sessions.

The second semester is a continuation of alphabet recognition and printing skills with heavier stress on phonics and simple writing skills.

  • WTR Lab
  • Buckle My Shoe (2nd semester)

Math
The purpose of Math studies is to help the child experience the use of numbers, including:

  • Learning numbers(1 to 10)
  • Printing numbers
  • Number concepts
  • Simple measurement principals.
  • Help the child learn appropriate vocabulary with which to describe quantities and relationships

In the second semester we learn:

  • Simple addition and subtraction to 10
  • Telling time on the hour
  • Recognition of money (coins) will be introduced
  • Learning numbers (11 to 20)

Social Studies
The purpose of Social Studies at this age is to enable children to experience living in a group:

  • Cooperation
  • Tolerance
  • Sharing
  • Working and playing together

Special Holidays are introduced including various customs and traditions.

Science
In Science we familiarize the child with the physical properties of the environment.

Plants, animals, humans and food products will also be covered. Simple experiments will be conducted (life cycle of a butterfly; life cycle of a plant).

Music
We work to develop an appreciation of music. The children will develop their vocabulary by learning new words as they sing. Formal music instruction by our music teacher is 3 times per week.

Creative Arts
In Creative Arts we introduce the child to different types of art media:

  • Clay
  • Paints
  • Collage materials
  • Chalk etc.
  • These activities will provide an avenue for self-expression; also cultivate an appreciation of art.

Creative Movement
Creative movement is to promote effective body motion. Through manipulative activity the child will learn to coordinate motion, strength and balance.
