Fifth Grade - Physical Education
Class Days
Monday & FridayEmphasis
Manipulating objects with accuracy and speed
Grade-Specific
Characteristics
At this level students continue to manipulate a
variety of objects according to more specific goals. Now
accuracy and speed, with a focus on targets, become
important. Eye-hand, eye-foot, and other forms of
coordination, begin to come together. Fifth graders try
continually to improve their motor skills, celebrate
their successes and achievements, and take pride in
individual excellence. Groups are expanded to include
more than five students, and cooperative learning
parallels that of other academic subjects. At this level
the concept of fairness is emphasized. Students may be
willing to change rules in order to achieve fairness for
all.
Grade-Specific
Learning Goals
This is only a sample of some of the primary goals
that we have for this grade.
- Manipulate objects
with accuracy and speed
- Be involved in
gamelike activities, with emphasis on more than
two skills
- Distinguish between
compliance and noncompliance with game rules
- Use fundamental
strategies (example: offensive and defensive
strategies) in simple games
- Recognize that
different body types are more effective in
certain movement skills and activities
- Recognize that
specific types of practice are required to
achieve specific goals (for example: one type of
practice may be to concentrate on improving
speed, another on improving accuracy, and still
another to improve both)
- Begin to appreciate
individual differences within small-group
competition and cooperation
- View the practice
and perfection of performance in line and dances
positively
In the Physical
Education class, as in life, children learn, develop, and
perform at different rates as they grow and mature. While
the Physical Education Department has grade-specific
learning goals we also recognize these individual
differences and, while challenging, it is our goal to
teach each student at the level that they are ready and
prepared for.
General Physical
Education Objectives
Physical Education classes will prepare students to
receive proper guidance and instruction in sports-related
activities, as well as introducing benefits of health and
nutrition, in order to make physical fitness a lifetime
choice.
This will be
accomplished by students developing basic motor skills,
coordination, body awareness, physical fitness testing,
stretching, and skill instruction of various traditional
and non-traditional sports and games. Emphasis in the
classroom will be placed on respect of self and others,
individual and teamwork accomplishments, skill
development and positive sportsmanship.
Grading
Students will be assessed a grade primarily based on
their Dress, Participation, Conduct & Cooperation, as
well as Tests and number of Absences.
